Tax Nuggets Academy

Designing a unified web platform, a functional Figma component library, and self-service account surfaces for professional users
About the project

Tax Nuggets Academy is an international e-learning platform created to deliver engaging, on-demand tax education and structured compliance training for financial professionals. Moving away from traditional, dry educational formats, the platform focuses on providing high-quality video content and live training events for a growing professional community.

The release of Tax Nuggets 2.0 marked a major milestone in unifying the entire digital product ecosystem. By consolidating live events, video streaming, and automated compliance tracking under a single platform access, the project transformed separate, disjointed web services into a cohesive B2B SaaS experience, complemented by optimized web landing pages designed to drive growth.

The Context

Tax Nuggets Academy is an e-learning platform delivering tax training and compliance materials to accountants and accounting firms. Over a three-and-a-half-year period as the sole product designer, I collaborated directly with the co-founders and the Chief Technology Officer to restructure the platform's interfaces, leading to the release of Tax Nuggets 2.0.

The Challenge

Initially, the academy’s services were split across different web areas and required separate logins, creating a fragmented user experience and design debt. The objective was to merge these disjointed surfaces into a single web platform. This required building a consistent component library in Figma from scratch while completely redesigning the user dashboards, team management panels, and compliance tracking logs.

My role

As the sole product designer on the project, my responsibilities spanned the full spectrum of the platform’s interface development. Taking ownership of the design function allowed me to define the visual identity, brand layout, and interactive structures across both the core product surfaces and the public marketing web channels.

I collaborated daily with the co-founders and the Chief Technology Officer to ensure every design choice balanced user-centric logic with structural engineering constraints. This direct engineering partnership allowed us to build an active, scalable product ecosystem, while I independently managed the front-facing web properties using Webflow to ensure absolute brand consistency.

Throughout our three-and-a-half-year collaboration, I managed the end-to-end product design cycle. My daily execution included conducting qualitative user research, structural wireframing, high-fidelity UI design, web development in Webflow, component prototyping, iconography development, and detailed frontend hand-off support.

With the launch of Tax Nuggets 2.0, the core objective shifted from individual feature creation to building a unified, scalable ecosystem. The final system was designed to reduce customer support bottlenecks, eliminate frontend design debt, and establish a repeatable layout foundation that supports both the product's long-term growth and its marketing acquisition funnels.

Product Architecture & Core Workflows

The Unified Platform Model

Consolidating Split Services

In the previous setup, the academy's services were split across different web areas and required multiple logins. For example, users had to log into a separate website just to access their compliance CPD reports.

To fix this visual and functional fragmentation, the architecture was simplified into a single, unified web platform. Under Tax Nuggets 2.0, everything was brought under a single user account login. Now, users can navigate between Live Events, on-demand videos, and automated CPD reports from one central layout, reducing navigation interruptions and streamlining the overall product structure.

One-Click Registration & Upgraded Tracking

Streamlining Content Delivery

Prototyping new workflows allowed us to drastically reduce the number of steps required to interact with core features. We implemented a one-click registration process for Live Events directly from the calendar, completely removing the need for users to re-enter their personal details on every single landing page.

In parallel, the tracking dashboard was re-architected into "My CPD". This data-dense section enhanced compliance reports with real-time watch logs and an "All Time" filter. This addition allows users to view their complete learning history in one click, making it straightforward to meet annual compliance checks and audits without manual record keeping

Self-Service Team Management

Introducing the Organisation Owner Panel

The management of corporate and firm accounts was updated to give group administrators direct control over their allocations. We replaced the old "Team Managers" structure with an updated administration surface for the Organisation Owner.

I designed practical account surfaces that allow team owners to set up new member accounts, add or remove active users instantly, update corporate billing details in real time, and manage their total Teams Plan directly. This self-service setup means administrators no lifestyle longer need to contact manual support for everyday account updates, handling everything in one place on their own schedule.

Scalable Foundations & Engineering Alignment

Design System Architecture

Building the Figma Component Library

To address the platform’s legacy design debt, I built a structured component library in Figma from the ground up. Instead of creating isolated UI elements, the system was organized around design tokens, foundational primitives, and semantic layers. This systemic setup ensured that properties like spacing grids, typographic scales, and color states mirrored frontend engineering logic, creating a repeatable framework that allows any designer or developer to introduce new layouts without breaking visual consistency.

Accessibility & Hand-off Precision

WCAG Compliance & Developer Handoff

Designing for a diverse professional community required a strict focus on digital inclusion. Every interface update for Tax Nuggets 2.0 was audited to meet WCAG 2.1/2.2 AA accessibility standards, focusing on high color contrast ratios, clear focus states, and accessible form structures. To ensure these decisions survived implementation, I prepared comprehensive hand-off documentation in Notion, mapping out responsive interaction behaviors and edge cases, which allowed the CTO and developers to deploy clean, accessible code with minimal friction.
